The mask should already be selected and edit mask toggled, but verify with your eyeballs. So add a layer mask as davep told you, select black/full transparent, and your picture layer should disappear. So yea the gradient tool especially the designer isn't really well-documented I'll give you that, because it's supposed to be intuitive.
